Faculty Director for the von der Heyden Fellows Program

Duke Global is seeking a faculty director for the von der Heyden Fellows Program. This fellowship provides financial support, a cohort experience, and professional development opportunities to advanced Duke PhD students whose dissertations are situated in international or regional studies.

Eligible applicants for the fellowship are Duke PhD students who have successfully completed their preliminary exams and fieldwork and are deeply engaged in research that bridges international or regional studies with critical issues of racial, social, and equitable justice. Students are expected to use the fellowship year to make progress on their dissertation.

The faculty director position will work in close partnership with the Global Program Support (GPS) unit, where the endowment is managed.

The areas of responsibility for this assignment include:

  • Manage the annual selection process, conducted in November, for the incoming cohort of fellows. The fellows for the 2026/27 academic year, beginning June 1, 2026, and ending May 31, 2027, have already been selected.
  • Engage regularly with the fellows to support their active and successful participation in the program.
  • Collaborate with fellows to plan and facilitate ongoing professional development discussions.
  • Coordinate with the Duke Global team to identify, address, and resolve any programmatic issues or challenges.
  • Align program with institutional priorities and connect fellowship experience to broader global engagement opportunities.

Selection criteria for the faculty director:

  • Must have international stature within his/her profession, field, or discipline and/or be a major figure within his/her national context, with responsibilities or expertise of significant comparative interest.
  • Proven track record of mentorship for graduate or professional students.
  • Priority will be given to nominees whose background, experience, or work aligns with Duke’s institutional priorities.
  • The individual’s expertise and interests should be relevant to students and faculty in two or more of the University’s schools or major academic units, and their program at Duke should be designed to foster cooperation among the faculty and students of the units.

During the academic year, under the leadership of the faculty director, fellows are expected to:

  • Participate in bi-weekly interdisciplinary cohort seminars.
  • Lead at least one of the bi-weekly seminars.
  • Make progress toward completing their dissertation.

The GPS office will administer the program including managing the flow of funds to students and providing light financial and administrative support for the professional development sessions and other programming.

Funding for this effort includes $7,500 as a taxable supplement or as discretionary funds and $3,000 to support programming.

Interested faculty should apply to global@duke.edu by May 27, 2026. Please provide a CV and one-page statement of interest that addresses how you meet the criteria and why the position is of interest.
