Global Publications Fund

The Global Publications Fund supports faculty, postdoc, and student publications related to globally related research topics.  The fund intends to supplement the cost of publications.

To be eligible for funding, applicants must be currently enrolled at/employed by Duke and must remain in active status through the period of proposed funding disbursement.  

Eligible publication-related expenses: 

  • Journal publication or open-access fees
  • Editorial services
  • Translation services 
  • Image licensing fees
  • Printing costs 
  • Indexing or formatting fees   

Non-eligible expenses: 

  • Travel or conference fees
  • General research expenses unrelated to publication 
  • Equipment purchases 
  • Salaries, stipends, or tuition 
  • Expenses incurred prior to award notification 
  • Costs outside the scope of publication production or dissemination 

Award Details

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until all available funding has been awarded.

Applicants may request a maximum award of $1,500. Awarded funds must be used within the fiscal year in which they are granted. Funds may not be used for reimbursement of costs already incurred. 

Award funds will be disbursed through a Duke fund code whenever possible. Recipients should work with their department to pay eligible publication expenses and use the provided fund code to clear the expense, up to the awarded amount.

Application Requirements

Each proposal must include the following items: 

  • Author(s)
  • Title 
  • Publisher 
  • Lay Abstract (300-500 words): Describe the publication and its broader significance for a general audience using accessible language. 
  • Publication acceptance letter 
  • Itemized budget and budget justification (vendor quotes) detailing the funds requested 
  • Description of additional funds received for this publication (if applicable). 

Criteria for Review

Applications will be evaluated based on relevance to global themes, budget justification, and availability of funds. 

Post-Award Requirements

Recipients of awards and grants consent to provide progress updates and have news of their work shared via external communications, such as the Duke Global website, newsletter or other press releases and publications, and to present their work at appropriate forums on campus.
