Michael Merson is the Vice President and Vice Provost for Global Affairs, as well as the founder and former director of the Duke Global Health Institute. Dr. Merson is an expert in disease prevention and has held leadership and advisory positions at organizations around the world, including the World Health Organization, the World Bank, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Center for Disease Control. In his current role, Merson leads the Duke Office of Global Affairs, which plans and coordinates many of Duke’s global programs and partnerships.

Eve M. Duffy

Born into a military family, Eve spent part of her youth in Asia and Europe. After receiving a BA from Midwestern State University, she earned her Magister in history and political science from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat in Munich and her PhD in German history at UNC-Chapel Hill. Eve is a scholar of German culture and social history. She has co-authored and translated several books.

She looks forward to working with faculty, staff and students on global projects.

Amanda Solliday

Amanda joined the Office of Global Affairs in June 2018. She is an expert time-traveler and has lived in all four times zones in the United States. Amanda brings media and outreach experience from her previous work as a communicator at two national labs, as a public radio journalist on the U.S.-Mexico border, and as a scientist in the federal government.

She earned a master’s degree in journalism from Indiana University and a master’s degree in crop and soil sciences from Cornell University, where she specialized in international agriculture. As an undergraduate, Amanda studied biology and environmental studies at Illinois Wesleyan University and spent a semester abroad at King’s College in London.

Amanda happily accepts story ideas and restaurant recommendations.

Colette E. Watt

Colette received her BA in peace, war and defense from UNC-Chapel Hill before pursuing a Master’s in international studies from North Carolina State University. As an undergraduate student, Colette studied in Northern Ireland, where she met her husband Iain. Her favorite place to visit is Copenhagen, second only to Belfast. She enjoys reading about and learning about Nordic cultures.

Hien Nguyen

Hien was born in Go Cong, Vietnam and came to the U.S. in 1981. She spent most of her life in Massachusetts and received her BS in Business Management from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. Hien has many years of experience working in international departments in higher education. She enjoys learning about other cultures and being out in nature. One of her favorite experiences is hiking in the Swiss Alps.

Alexandra Gara

Alex is a current sophomore at Duke, pursuing a major in political science. Born to an American mother and Hungarian father, she grew up Budapest and regularly traveled the world, including visits to her mom’s home state of Alabama. In line with her international upbringing, Alex aspires to a career in diplomacy with the aim of impacting healthcare policy on a global scale.
